The scientific name of this hammock-shaped muscle is still the pubococcygeus muscle, its Latin name still musculus pubococcygeus. In men, it stretches from the pubic bone to the coccyx, or the end of the vertebral column, in a figure eight pattern around the genitals. It is the most important muscle of the pelvic floor and it carries out important jobs such as controlling the flow of urine and contracting during sexual intercourse (the jolts and spasms of orgasm are a result of the rapid involuntary contractions of the PC muscle).
Even though the common name is singular, “PC muscle”, this is actually a cluster of muscles that form a sling-shaped muscle group, the pubococcygeus muscles. This group of muscles is found in the female and male pelvis, and includes the pelvic diaphragm, pubococcygeus, puborectalis (part of the larger pubococcygeus muscle), iliococcygeus, coccygeus, piriformis, iliacus, and psoas major. The puborectalis and PC muscle wrap around the posterior aspect of the rectum, creating a “sling” that holds the rectum forward in the pelvis.
In addition, the PC and iliococcygeus muscles make up the levator ani, which are muscles that support the midline organs of the pelvis. Men have the same group of muscles, but without the vaginal support.
The PC muscle is very important for men during sexual intercourse. Kegel exercises increase blood flow to the pelvic region, increasing sensitivity and making men more aware of the body parts involved in their sexual responses. Not only can stronger PC muscles increase the force of and give a man greater control over the timing of his ejaculations, it can ease ED symptoms, give him more control over his bladder, and make his prostate healthier.
While the PC muscle does not directly influence a man’s hormones, the condition his PC muscle is in can affect his feelings about his masculinity and his sexuality. By strengthening and toning the PC muscle through Kegel exercises, men can boost their confidence in the bedroom and their comfort with their bodies outside of the bedroom. It can also make him feel better by improving the circulation to his genitals, improving his overall health.
As men age, urinary stress incontinence occurs. This is the “dribbling” many men experience after urination. While it is a naturally occurrence as men age, it is not a very pleasant one. Strengthening the PC muscle through exercises such as the Kegel exercises will make this disappointing “dribble” a memory.
Erectile problems such as erectile dysfunction (ED) often result from poor circulation to the genitals, and having a tone PC muscle can help correct this condition. Exercising the PC muscle will help improve blood flow to the region, resulting in longer lasting erections with fuller girth. This improved circulation also improves the quality of his ejaculation. The stronger the PC muscles are the greater their pressurized output is, resulting in ejaculations with more force. This increased blood flow will also improve the overall genital health of men, resulting in more fulfilling and satisfying life experiences.
Exercises to get a strong and tone PC muscles help the prostate because each time a man performs the squeezing and releasing motions, the PC muscle massages the prostate, resulting in increased circulation for it as well. Also, each time the prostate is massaged, mild pressure is being applied to it, gently squeezing blood out of it. When the PC muscle releases that pressure also releases, allowing fresh blood to rush through the prostate; this fresh blood carries fresh oxygen and nutrients to the prostate, keeping the gland healthier overall.
Another health benefit outside of the bedroom having a strong PC muscle provides are situations resulting from weaknesses of the pelvic floor. Conditions involving the intestines such as prolapsed pelvic organs and hemorrhoids are a result of think, weak muscles constituting the pelvic floor, of which the PC is the largest and should be the strongest. A fit and tone PC muscle will significantly lower a man’s chance of suffering one of these painful conditions.
Keeping a tone and fit PC muscle will improve a man’s overall quality of life by stimulating blood flow to and from the genital region (including the prostate gland), improve the quality and sustainability of erections, reduce urinary stress incontinence, and improve his self-esteem.
